How to Read ATEX Marking

ATEX marking summarizes the explosive-atmosphere type and protection approach for which equipment is intended. Protection type, group, temperature class and the other marking elements must always be checked against the site conditions.

01

ATEX marking is a summary of suitability, not just a code

The marking summarizes where and under which protection concept the product may be used. Each element of the marking should be compared with the hazardous-area requirements.

02

Protection types

Common markings include Ex d for flameproof enclosures, Ex e for increased safety, Ex i for intrinsic safety, and Ex t or Ex tb for protection by enclosure in dust atmospheres.

03

Gas and dust groups

Gas equipment may carry IIA, IIB or IIC markings, while dust equipment may use IIIA, IIIB or IIIC. The selected group must be suitable for the explosive material present at the facility.

04

Temperature class and surface temperature

For gas atmospheres, T1 to T6 classes limit the permitted maximum surface temperature. For dust atmospheres, the maximum surface temperature is often stated directly in degrees Celsius.

05

IP rating does not replace ATEX compliance

An IP rating describes enclosure protection against solids and water. It is not the same as ATEX suitability. The two criteria address different risks and must be evaluated together.
